Ice Skating and Ice Hockey Print E-mail

Ice skating and hockey are sports that are growing in popularity  in northern California and southern Oregon. There are a few rinks in the area and if weather conditions allow the high alpine lakes to freeze over in the early winter, and if the ice is thick enough, and with out any major accumulation of snow to burry the ice, the lakes and ponds are sometimes used for ice skating.

Ice skating on frozen lakes can be extremely dangerous. The temperature in northern California and southern Oregon can can cause unstable ice when it fluctuates between above and below freezing, from day to day, like the temperature commonly does. One day the temperatures could be below freezing the next day the temp could be up in the 50s. Ice thicknesses are a result of temperature and can change rapidly.

When attempting to venture out on the ice you can assume that ICE IS NEVER TOTALY SAFE and must always be respected for it is unstable and there is always lurking danger. This being said some ice adventurers will use the 4 inch rule. For the frozen surface of a lake to start supporting an average sized human the ice must be at least 4 inches thick and this is not always the case, there are many factors to take in and unless you are an expert beware, you are taking your life into your own hands when you step onto the ice.

Most of the lower altitude lakes never freeze to the point where they are safe to cross. Ice skating when possible is usually only done on higher altitude alpine lakes. One of the most popular ice ice skating lakes is Castle Lake just out of Mount Shasta. This lake usually freezes over and in certain conditions can be optimal for ice skating.
