Ice Fishing |

Ice fishing is not as popular in Northern California as it is in the northern mid western states due to the warmer overall temperatures. Temperature can be a problem when it fluctuate between above and below freezing, from day to day, like the temperatures do in Northern California. One day the temperatures could be below freezing the next day the temp could be up in the 50s. Ice thicknesses are a result of temperature and can change rapidly.
When attempting to venture out on the ice you can assume that ICE IS NEVER TOTALY SAFE and must always be respected for it is unstable and there is always lurking danger. This being said some ice adventurers will use the 4 inch rule. For the frozen surface of a lake to start supporting an average sized human the ice must be at least 4 inches thick and this is not always the case, there are many factors to take in and unless you are an expert beware, you are taking your life into your own hands when you step onto the ice.
Most of the lower altitude lakes never freeze to the point where they are safe to cross. Ice fishing when possible is usually only done on higher altitude alpine lakes. One of the most popular ice fishing lakes is Castle Lake just out of Mount Shasta. This lake usually freezes over and in certain conditions can be optimal for ice fishing.
